1. Use a calculator in the examination. There is no point in losing marks for making silly mathematical errors that you would not normally make.

2. Show your workings. Even if you get the wrong result, by showing your calculations process you will pick up some marks.

3. Follow all instructions given on the paper (N.B. headings on analysis columns, using + and - in budget comparison, etc).

4. Read the question carefully. Take note whether you were asked for a letter, a memo or a report. Marks are awarded for using the correct layout.

5. Keep an eye on timing. In the long questions, give 10 minutes for every 16 marks.

Cian Ó Gradaigh graduated from Trinity College, Dublin in 1996 with a B.Bs and a H.Dip Ed. He started his teaching career in St Paul's College, Raheny and currently teaches in Colaiste Mhuire, Cabra in Dublin.
